Joseph Agbeko has anointed the winner of his fight against Abner Mareson April 23 as "the best bantamweight in the world," and he believes he'll be king when it's all over.
"The winner of this fight is the best bantamweight in the world, of course," he said Tuesday. "This tournament was open to everybody — all the greatest fighters at bantamweight. The tough fought. We were brave enough to make the decision to fight in the tournament, and that shows we are the best at bantamweight."
Mares (21-0, 13 knockouts) won his tournament semifinal over Vic Darchinyan, while Agbeko (28-2, 22 KOs) defeated Jhonny Perez the same night. The Mares-Agbeko final is at the Nokia Theater in Los Angeles, with Agbeko’s IBF bantamweight title at stake.
"When I come prepared to fight, no one can survive," Agbeko said. "When I fought Yhonny Perez the first time [a decision loss], I wasn't fully prepared. In the second fight, I proved I'm the best bantamweight."
Darchinyan (35-3-1, 27 KOs) and Perez (20-1-1, 14 KOs) meet in the tournament's consolation fight.
