The championship match in Showtime’s bantamweight tournament between Joseph Agbeko and Abner Mares has been rescheduled for Aug. 13. The site has yet to be determined.
Agbeko couldn’t fight on the original date, April 23, because of a sudden bout with sciatica the week of the fight.
The IBF titleholder has been cleared by doctors to resume training for the fight. He returned to his native Ghana during his recovery but is due back in the U.S. next week.
"I have been receiving physical therapy treatments here in Accra and I am happy to report that my body has responded well," Agbeko said. "I feel healthy and stronger than ever and will be ready to fight on Aug. 13."
Mares welcomed the news.
"I'm excited to get the fight with Agbeko rescheduled so I can finish what I started and win the bantamweight tournament,” he said. “It was unfortunate that Agbeko was injured in April, but I'm happy he has recovered and we have a date set now. I want to fight the best and I know I can beat the best. I will not rest until I become the best of the best in the bantamweight division."
Agbeko (28-2, 22 knockouts) outpointed Yonnhy Perez on Dec. 11 to reach the tournament final. Mares (21-0-1, 13 KOs) rallied to outpoint Vic Darchinyan to reach the championship match.
