Boxing legend Micky Ward suffered serious injuries Wednesday, sustaining bites on his arm and fingers, when a stray dog attacked him near his home in Lowell, Mass.
Ward reportedly was walking his own dog when the other animal approached his dog in an aggressive manner, prompting the fighter to intervene.
He sustained injuries serious enough to warrant hospitalization, including a major wound on the index finger of his right hand, which was almost torn off in the attack.
Ward, 45, is the former IBF light welterweight champion and a three-time participant in THE RING magazine's "Fight of the Year," two of those bouts against Arturo Gatti, the third against Emanuel Augustus.
He gained more fame in the 2010 film "The Fighter," in which he was played by actor Mark Wahlberg.
