Light heavyweight titleholder Tavoris Cloud retained his IBF belt for the third time with an eighth-round stoppage of Yusaf Mack in the co-featured bout to the Devon Alexander-Lucas Matthysse headlined card at the Family Arena in St. Charles, Mo., on Saturday.
Cloud (23-0, 19 knockouts) utilized steady pressure and a concentrated body attack to wear down Mack, who boxed and counter punched well in spots during the HBO-televised bout. Mack (29-4-2, 17 KOs), a 31-year-old veteran from Philadelphia, sported the quicker hands and faster feet but Cloud, a relentless 29-year-old Tallahassee, Fla., native, stayed on top of Mack and gradually cut the ring off.
Cloud landed a well-timed left hook that dropped Mack into a corner. A weary looking Mack struggled to his feet but Cloud quickly sent him back to the canvas with a pair of chopping right hands to the body. Mack once again got to his feet but was unable (or unwilling) to walk forward when referee Sam Williams asked him to.
Williams waved the bout off at 2:57 of the eighth round.
