British junior featherweight prospect Scott Quigg is on course for a world title shot if he beats Franklin Varela, of Venezuela, on July 23.
The WBA has made Quigg's inter-continental date with Varela, in his hometown of Bury, an eliminator for its world belt, currently held by Japanese star Akifumi Shimoda, who meets the organisation's number one contender Rico Ramos, July 9.
"I am buzzing at this news. Hatton Promotions have delivered once again, " said the unbeaten 22-year-old Englishman.
Quigg (21-0, 14 knockouts) is ranked seventh by the WBA, while Varela (19-5, 10 KOs) is eleventh. He is also due to face fellow-countryman Jason Booth for his British title in October.
Former two-weight world champion Ricky Hatton, head of Hatton Promotions, is certainly talking up Quigg’s potential to hit the heights.
“We have moved Scott along steadily, but now he is in world class – and will prove it against Varela,” said Hatton.
