Mayweather stops Ortiz in crazy fourth round

LAS VEGAS — Floyd Mayweather Jr. stopped Victor Ortiz at 2:59 of a crazy fourth round to become the WBC welterweight titleholder on Saturday.

The ending was crazy. It went something like this:

Ortiz was attacking in one corner when he purposely head butted Mayweather, who suffered a cut on his mouth. Ortiz, who lost a point, seemed to apologize a moment later when he embraced Mayweather in the corner.

Then, as the fighters appeared to embrace as action resumed, Mayweather suddenly landed a left and then a straight right as Ortiz was looking to referee Joe Cortez. Ortiz went down and didn’t get up by the count of 10.

Mayweather seemed to be on his way to an easy victory. He consistently landed hard rights and Ortiz, appearing to be in over his head, had trouble finding his target.

Ortiz appeared to lose each of the first three rounds.

A full report will follow shortly.
