Andre Berto sweated his way through a regimen of exercises with sprint coach Remi Korchemny at the College of San Mateo nearly a month before dethroning IBF welterweight titleholder Jan Zaveck by fifth-round knockout last month.
Ranked No. 3 in THE RING ratings, Berto (28-1, 22 KOs) handed Zaveck (31-2, 18 KOs) the first stoppage of his career, bouncing back from a unanimous decision loss of his WBC title to Victor Ortiz (29-3-2, 22 KOs) in April.
Following the loss to Ortiz, Berto teamed up with controversial BALCO founder Victor Conte, whom he credits for re-energizing his workouts, in association with Korchemny.
After examining Berto’s blood samples, Conte found the fighter to be overtrained and severely anemic.
