Lem’s latest: Reyes honors father; Steward trains Gamboa

Some interesting personal and side stories will be involved Friday night at Bally’s Event Center in Atlantic City, N.J., when super middleweight Brandon Gonzales of Sacramento takes on Ghana native Ossie Duran of Paterson, N.J., and unbeaten former 2008 Olympian Javier Molina of Norwalk, Calif., clashes with welterweight rival Artemio Reyes of Colton, Calif.

The 27-year-old Gonzales (14-0, 10 KOs) was the sparring partner with RING No. 1-rated super middleweight and WBA titleholder Andre Ward (24-0, 13 KOs) last month when Ward suffered a cut over his right eye that forced the postponement of his bout with WBC counterpart Carl Froch (28-1, 20 KOs) for the Showtime’s Super Six World Boxing Classic and RING championships.

Ward-Froch was scheduled for Oct. 29 in Atlantic City, N.J., but has now been pushed back to Dec. 17 at the gambling town’s Boardwalk Hall.

Gonzales is going against the 34-year-old Duran (26-8-2, 10 KOs), whose three-bout winning streak includes a 10th-round knockout over Latif Mundy.

The 21-year-old Molina (9-0, 4 KOs) is going up against Reyes (13-1, 11 KOs), a winner of 12 straight fights who is coming off a second-round stoppage of Miguel Angel Munguia in August.

Reyes wears the phrase “Fighting 4 Pops” on his trunks when he fights to honor of his father, who has been in a coma since a car accident in 2008.

Hall of Fame trainer Manny Steward  has been hired to coach unbeaten former title holder and RING No. 1-rated Cuban Olympic gold medalist featherweight Yuriorkis Gamboa, promoter Ahmet Oner has announced.

Co-promoted by Oner and Top Rank Inc., Gamboa (21-0, 16 KOs) joins RING No. 1-rated WBA, IBF and WBO heavyweight titleholder  Wladimir Klitschko, among others who are trained by Steward.

“Emanuel Steward is one of the best trainers in the world. With Gamboa, he now has one of the best fighters in the world. I am very happy with this solution, and I hope that Steward will take Gamboa to the next level,” said Oner.

“Yuri is already a complete fighter, but it doesn’t matter how good you are. A great trainer will always find a way to make you even better.”
