The anticipated rematch between Hernan Marquez and Luis Concepcion, THE RING’s Nos. 1 and 2-rated flyweights, was not the all-out war their first bout was but it was a thriller while it lasted.
Marquez decked the hard-charing Concepcion three times en route to scoring a wild first-round stoppage, defending the WBA title he won in their first encounter in Hermosillo, Mexico, on Saturday.
The 23-year-old Mexican southpaw won their first bout, a fight of the year candidate, by 11th-round TKO in April. Marquez (32-2, 25 knokcouts), made one defense of the WBA belt between his bouts with the 26-year-old Panamanian. He has now won five in a row since losing back to back bouts to Richie Mepranum and Nonito Donaire last year.
Concepcion falls to 23-3, with 18 KOs, with the crushing rematch loss.
