RingTV.com: Do you have a prediction on the fight with Bute?
Glen Johnson: Yeah, Glen Johnson’s going to be the winner. I’m going to go into the ring and I’m going to use my fists until I win. Basically, that’s what I’m going to do. I can’t tell you whether or not it will be a knockout or a decision.
But I just know that I’m going to win the fight. I don’t think that Lucian has faced a guy with my ability and talent. I know that I have the ability and the talent to win.
RingTV.com: Can you shed any more light on the way that the sparring went between you and Bute and whether or not you believe that will be a factor in the figtht?
GJ: I don’t think that I necessarily know Lucian better than anybody else because of the sparring, but I just feel that I’m more talented than he is. That’s all.
As far as the sparring, exactly what would you like to know about the sparring? I was getting ready for a fight with Chad Dawson, and he was getting ready for a fight with Librado Andrade.
We sparred together. We sparred 100 or so rounds and we helped each other out tremendously. That was it. I’m not even looking at any of that. I don’t want to cloud my preparation with anything that happened in the sparring.
Fighting and sparring are two, totally different situations. First of all, I was fighting a different style in preparing for Chad Dawson, even thought they’re both southpaws.
I was not trying to compete against a Lucian Bute, I was trying to prepare for the style of Chad Dawson. I’m not even focused on that. That’s irrelevant to me.
RingTV.com: Did you take anything positive away from the loss to Froch that will help you in your adjustments for this fight with Bute?
GJ: Well, the only thing that I take away from the Carl Froch fight is that knowledge that if I had stuck with my gameplan, I would have won the fight.
I got away from the gameplan. I got too greedy. I just got away from my gameplan and it worked against me in the end.
RingTV.com: You’ve been doing this for a long time and you have a lot of fans, but will the result of this fight factor into whether or not you retire?
GJ: I don’t think that the result will have much bearing on whether or not I retire. But I’m sure that it will depend more on my market value after the fight more than anything else.
What will happen or where will I go? I’m not even thinking about options after the Lucian Bute fight. As far as my personal feelings about retiring or not retiring, that’s not even on my mind right now.
I don’t think about that. That’s not even something that’s a part of my thought process, so everybody else can worry about that.
For me, I’m just trying to go out there and do my job and stick with my fight. Speaking of that, I’m in the gym right now, so let me go ahead and get my training on and we will see how it goes.
