It looks like all of Michael Katsidis’ talk of getting Ricky Hatton to un-retire and fight him was premature. The Ricky the perennial lightweight contender needed to worry about was not the former 140-pound champ but rather the former 130-pound beltholder he faced in London on Saturday.
Ricky Burns out-boxed Katsidis to a unanimous decision. The 28-year-old Scottish boxer, who won by scores of 117-112 and 117-111 (twice), neutralized Katsidis’ trademark aggression and pressure with his jab and lateral movement.
Burns (33-2, 9 knockouts) recently vacated the WBO 130-pound title that he won from Roman Martinez last September and defended three times to campaign at lightweight.
Katsidis (28-5, 23 KOs) suffered his third loss in his last four bouts. The 31-year-old Australian dropped a unanimous decision to Robert Guerrero in April. He was stopped in nine rounds in a challenger to RING lightweight champ Juan Manuel Marquez last November.
