Quillin scores seventh-round TKO of McEwan

Undefeated middleweight prospect Peter Quillin stopped Craig McEwan in the seventh round of their scheduled 10-round co-feature to the Alfredo Angulo-James Kirkland main event in Cancun, Mexico, on Saturday.

The stoppage of the HBO-televised bout was premature in the eyes of most viewers, although Quillin (26-0, 20 knockouts) was in firm command of the bout when he landed a lead hook that staggered the Scottish southpaw into a corner where the athletic boxer-puncher landed a follow-up right hand before the referee stepped in and waved the bout off.

McEwan (19-2, 10 KOs) was on his feet and punching back when the bout was stopped. The Los Angeles-based fringe contender was coming off a 10th-round stoppage at the hands of Andy Lee in March.
