Roach reality series to premiere on Jan. 20 on HBO

For months, visitors to the Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood, Calif. have been greeted by a disclaimer on the door saying something to the effect of “Anyone entering here agrees to allow themselves to be filmed from every angle.” The ceiling had more cameras than needed for normal security, and gym personnel often had microphones visible underneath their clothes. There were camera crews also, but then again, the Wild Card has so many camera crews in it these days that it’s hard to tell one from another.

Now, the results are in the can.

The debut of “On Freddie Roach,” an HBO reality series chronicling the daily life and routines of five-time Trainer of the Year Freddie Roach, will happen on Jan. 20, the network announced on Thursday.

Roach is the trainer of RING No. 1-pound-for-pound eight-division titleholder Manny Pacquiao, who successfully defended his WBO welterweight belt against RING No. 5-rated pound-for-pound Juan Manuel Marquez last Saturday night on HBO Pay Per View from the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

The 51-year-old Roach runs the prestigious Hollywood gym, where he also trains RING No. 1-rated junior welterweight and WBA/IBF beltholder Amir Khan, as well as RING No. 5-rated middleweight and WBC titleholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Roach’s accomplishments with those fighters are remarkable in their own right, but are even more amazing in light of the fact that Roach lives with Parkinson’s disease resulting from his pugilistic past.
