A dozen quotes from HBO’s second 24/7: Cotto-Margarito

The second episode of HBO’s “24/7: Cotto-Margarito” addressed the drama surrounding the New York State Athletic Commision’s decison on Nov. 23 to license ex-titleholder Antonio Margarito for his rematch with Miguel Cotto, among other things.

The series delves into the animosity between Cotto (36-2, 29 knockouts) and Margarito (38-7, 27 KOs) over the illegal handwraps issues from Margarito’s past, including the potential for his having used them during his 11th-round knockout of Cotto in July of 2008.

The segment also dealt with the brutal nature of Margarito’s eye injury — a fractured right orbital bone — which occurred during a November unanimous decision loss to Manny Pacquiao.

Also noted are Margarito’s two separate examinations by New York-based Dr. Kenneth J. Rosenthal, who is president of the New York Intraocular Lens Implant Society, and Manhattan-based, commission-designated opthalmologist, Dr. Michael T. Goldstein, whose favorable testimony determined that Margarito was fit to fight.

Below are 12 of the more compelling quotes taken from the show, listed in the order in which they were stated.

“I never gave up. My eye was swollen and I didn’t see well. [Trainer] Robert [Garcia] asked me, ‘Tony, how do you feel? Do you want me to stop the fight?’ I said, ‘No, please don’t do it. Let me finish the fight. I think I can get him,'”  Margarito, on the loss to Manny Pacquiao.

“The way that he’s boxing, the way that he’s working, the eye is not bothering him. No problems with the eye. They tell us to go full blast, and that’s what we do. Cotto had better be ready, because this motherf–ker is ready,” J’Leon Love, sparring partner for Margarito.
