NY weigh-in report: Rios fails to make weight

New York – The fighters stepped onto the scales ahead of the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito 2 HBO PPV card. The numbers:

Delvin Rodriguez, 153 vs Pawel Wolak, 153.5

Mike Jones, 146 vs Sebastian Lujan, 146

Brandon Rios 135.4 vs John Murray, 134.5

Rios dropped his drawers and still couldn’t make the lightweight limit. He was given an hour to make weight.

Miguel Cotto, 152.4 vs Antonio Margarito, 152 (fight contested at 153).

Margarito played up his villain persona, stepping on the scales with hat and shades. He looked ripped — by far the best he’s ever looked. Cotto also looked trim and ready.

Brandon Rios failed to make weight after two more attempts. The fight with John Murray will go on, after both parties agreed to a second weigh-in at 9 am the morning of the bout, the new weight a maximum of 146.6 pounds. Furthermore, Rios will forfeit $20,000 from his purse to Murray.

Rios’ WBA lightweight strap is now vacant. If Murray wins, he’s the new champ. If the bout is declared a draw or Rios is the victor, the title will remain vacant.

The tilt between all-action brawlers will serve as the co-feature to Cotto-Margarito 2.
