NEW YORK– Brandon Rios, THE RING’s No. 1-rated lightweight, weighed 146.4 pounds at a 9 a.m. weigh-in on Saturday, in agreement with a deal with the camp of John Murray for an HBO Pay Per View-televised clash later in the evening at Madison Square Garden.
Rios (28-0-1, 21 KOs), of Oxnard, Calif., lost his WBA title and $20,000 to Murray on Friday night when he failed to make the contracted 135-pound weight limit after three tries on the scale, an infraction that costs Rios his title in accordance with WBA rules.
In addition, Rios, who weighed 136.4, 135.6, and, 136.6, respectively, over three separate attempts within an hour, cut a deal with Murray that he would weigh no greater than 10 pounds (147) more when he was checked on Saturday at his hotel.
The fight will go on, but Rios has vacated his belt and will give $20,000 of his $325.000 purse to the Murray (31-1, 18 KOs), for whom a victory will earn the vacated title.
Murray’s original purse is $50.000, plus additional upside money from United Kingdom television.
Both camp members were present at the weigh-in at the Sheraton Hotel in New York, according to Top Rank Inc. publicist Lee Samuels. Murray was not required to re-weigh in.
Rios-Murray will happen on the undercard of the anticipated Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito rematch at Madison Square Garden.
