Lee remains unbeaten on the Miguel Cotto-Antonio Margarito undercard

NEW YORK –Light heavyweight prospect and Notre Dame graduate Mike Lee, of Chicaco, used a powerful overhand right to floor Allen Medina for good at 55 seconds of the fourth round for his eighth professional win Saturday night at Madison Square Garden.

A 24-year-old who graduated with a 3.8 grade point average and a degree in finance, Lee (8-0, 5 KOs) dropped Medina, of Fort Lupton, Colorado, to 9-20-1 (1 KO).

Lee-Medina took place on the undercard of an HBO Pay Per View-televised main event featuring ex-titleholder Antonio Margarito (38-8, 27 KOs) against RING No. 1-rated junior middleweight and WBA beltholder Miguel Cotto (37-2, 30 KOs).

Lee was fighting in the fifth bout of the evening, having trained in Mexico City with Ronnie Shields.

In the third bout of the evening, New Jersey junior middleweight Glen Tapia remained unbeaten with an exciting, toe-to-toe slugfest victory via second-round knockout over Puerto Rico’s Mike Ruiz in his third fight at The Garden.

In victory, the 21-year-old Tapia rose to 12-0 with his sixth knockout, earning it at 2:27 of the round as the 26-year-old Ruiz (15-7, 7 KOs) lay flat on the canvas and failed to beat Claudio’s 10-count.

Tapia improved his mark at The Garden to 3-0 with two knockouts, his previous win at the venue coming via second-round TKO over Nick Runningbear in June of last year.

The fourth fight of the evening featured lightheavyweight Sean Monaghan (11-0, 8 KOs), of Long Beach, N.Y., scoring a second round knockout at 2:56 over Michigan’s Santos Martinez (2-3 2 KOs).

In the night’s first bout, Puerto Rican welterweight Samuel Figueroa (2-0, 1 KO) won a four-round, split-decision over Ibrihim Shabazz, and in the second, Mexican bantamweight Hanzel Martinez (16-0, 13 KOs) ground out a four-round majority decision over Felipe Castaneda (6-4-1, 3 KOs) of San Antonio.
