Golovkin KOs Simon in first round, retains WBA middleweight title

Undefeated middleweight standout Gennady Golovkin knocked out former title challenger Lujan Simon in the first round to retain his WBA “regular” belt in Düsseldorf, Germany, on Friday.

Golovkin (22-0, 19 knockouts) connected with a short hook on the inside which dropped Simon flat on his back where the 32-year-old Philadelphia veteran was coutned out at 2:17 of the round.

Simon (23-4-2, 12 KOs), who lost a 12-round decision to Arthur Abraham in a failed bid for the IBF title in 2009, had never been stopped in his nine-year career.

Golovkin, a 29-year-old 2004 Olympic silver medalist from Kazakhstan, scored his ninth consecutive stoppage against Simon.
