Eddie Chambers (right) lands a straight right on his way to a unanimous decision over Derric Rossy
Heavyweight contender Eddie Chambers, who was scheduled to face Sergei Liakhovich in the premiere edition of NBC Sport Network’s Fight Night on Jan. 21, has pulled out of the bout due to broken ribs suffered in training.
Promoters Main Events and Peltz Boxing are now in a scramble to find a replacement to face Liakhovich (25-4, 16 knockouts) in order to salvage the show, and have said an announcement will be forthcoming.
The injury, described as “displaced fractures of his left anterior ninth and tenth ribs,” is the latest setback for Chambers (36-2, 18 KOs), who pulled out of a scheduled Oct. 28th IBF eliminator bout with Tony Thompson due to a back injury.
Chambers currently occupies the No. 4 spot in THE RING’s heavyweight rankings, though this latest development means his next fight will most likely take place well over a year after his last, which was a unanimous decision win over Derric Rossy on Feb. 11, 2011.
