Referees Jack Reiss of California and Samuel Viruet of New York and judge Glen Feldman from Connecticut have been chosen to review the evidence and testimony at Wednesday’s IBF hearing and to decide whether or not an immediate rematch is warranted for the controversial Lamont Peterson-Amir Khan title bout, IBF publicist Jeanette Salazar told RingTV.com on Sunday.
Khan and his promoter, Golden Boy Promotions, have filed appeals with the IBF and the WBA to overturn Peterson’s split-decision victory last month or else to order an immediate rematch based on the belief that the fight was poorly officiated and that there were scorecard descrepancies.
“They will review a video of the fight and they’ve been prepared [for the hearing,]” said Salazar, whose organization has prohibited media from attending the session.
“A packet was sent out to them with the two arguments from both sides and the different materials and the rules and whatnot, and they will review all of that information. From the hearing, they will then have 10 days within which to reach a decision.”
The panelists have been instructed not to speak publicly on the matter until a decision has been reached, Salazar indicated in an e-mail to RingTV.com.
Some of the issues involve IBF affiliate Mustafa Ameen, whose ringside behavior during the Dec. 10 bout was caught on video and seemed to include his picking up a yellow scoring slip near WBA ringside scoring official Michael Welsh.
The WBA already has ordered a return bout following, and has granted Peterson 10 days from Jan. 14 to appeal the organization’s mandate. Ameen will address his actions at the IBF hearing, which will also be attended by officials representing Khan and Golden Boy.
Feldman was a judge for Khan’s 11th-round knockout of Paulie Malignaggi in May of 2010.
Although barring the media from proceedings is normal, Salazar said the IBF is taking the “atypical” steps of providing a video record the hearing that will be available on the organization’s website — (www.ibf-usba-boxing.com) — within three days of the meeting.
