Lem’s latest: Roach on reality series, Pacquiao; Ortiz-Berto II airs in Spanish

MIGUEL DIAZ WON’T WORK THE CORNER OF CHAVEZ JR.

After working his past two fights, well-known cut man Miguel Diaz told RingTV.com that has been informed that he will not be in the corner for Chavez Jr.’s title defense against Marco Antonio Rubio on Feb. 4.

“I got a message on my cell phone from Chavez’s manager, Billy Keane, this week that I’m not working. Funny,” said Diaz, who turns 74 next month.

“It’s just a change of cut men, I guess. I have no thoughts about it. They just left the message that they got somebody else. But that’s okay.”

Diaz also has served as a cut man for fighters such as Pacquiao, Mayweather Jr., Cotto, Erik Morales, Kelly Pavlik, Israel Vazquez, Hasim Rahman, James Toney, and many others.

SHOWTIME TO OFFER VICTOR ORTIZ-ANDRE BERTO II IN SPANISH

The Showtime-televised rematch between former welterweight beltholders Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto will be offered in secondary audio programming in Spanish on Feb. 11 from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Alejando Luna will call the play-by-play action, and former IBF beltholder Raul Marquez will serve as color commentator.

Ortiz defeated Berto by close unanimous decision to win the WBC belt in what was hailed as the Fight of the Year by many boxing publications last April, but he was dethroned via fourth-round knockout loss to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last September.

Berto rebounded from the loss to Ortiz by dethroning IBF welterweight titleholder Jan Zaveck by fifth-round knockout last September, the first stoppage loss of Zaveck’s career.

Berto vacated the IBF belt in order to take the return bout with Ortiz. Ortiz-Berto I featured two knockdowns each by the fighters.

“I welcome a professional like Marcelo, who will bring his expertise both as a camp coordinator and a top-notch fitness expert,” said Sampson Lewkowicz, Martinez’s advisor.

“Not only is he one of the top people in his field, but he is also a former boxer, so he knows exactly what is needed.”
