Junior welterweight contender Lucas Matthysse scored a fifth-round stoppage of once-beaten prospect Angel Martinez in his native Argentina on Friday. Martinez (13-2-1, 9 knockouts) could not come out for the sixth round.
The stay-busy victory over the 20-year-old Mexican fighter set up an HBO-televised showdown between Matthysse and former 130-pound and lightweight beltholder Humberto Soto on the May 19 undercard of the Lamont Peterson-Amir Khan rematch in Las Vegas.
Matthysse (30-2, 28 KOs) is THE RING’s No. 4-rated junior welterweight. Soto is rated No. 10 at 140 pounds by the magazine.
