Heavyweights Tomasz Adamek and Sergei Liakhovich will compete in separate bouts on the undercard of an IBF eliminator between former betlholder Zab Judah and unbeaten junior welterweight Vernon Paris on NBC Sports Network’s Fight Night on March 24.
Coming off of a 10th-round knockout loss to WBC titleholder Vitali Klitschko that ended his run of 13 straight victories, Adamek (44-2, 28 knockouts) has signed a new, multi-fight deal with promoter Kathy Duva and will face an opponent to be determined.
“There is not much to say,” said Duva concerning her contract extension with the popular Polish fighter, whose only other loss happened in 2007 when he fought Chad Dawson as a light heavyweight. “We came to terms yesterday and we look forward to continuing our working relationship.”
Judah (41-7, 28 KOs) earned the IBF junior welterweight belt by a seventh-round knockout of Kaizer Mabuza in March before being dethroned via fifth-round stoppage by Amir Khan (26-1, 18 KOs) in July.
The veteran from Brooklyn represents the toughest challenge yet for Paris, a 24-year-old native of Detroit with a perfect 26-0 (15 KOs) record, both in terms of his opponent and the fact that he’ll be going 12 rounds for the first time. His last three wins were against Emanuel Augustus (UD 8), Tim Coleman (TKO 7) and Ruben Galvan (UD 8).
Liakhovich (25-4, 16 KOs), of Russia, who will meet Philadelphia’s Bryant Jennings (12-0, 5 KOs), was set to face Eddie Chambers (36-2, 18 KOs) in the Jan. 21 premiere of Fight Night before Chambers broke a rib in sparring and withdrew from the bout.
“I am glad to be fighting on NBC Sports Network. I look forward to my fight with Jennings,” said Liakhovich. “I like fighting guys who appreciate a challenge like me. I am in great shape and can’t wait to get back in the ring.”
Jennings is coming off of a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Maurice Byarm in January.
“We feel we should strike while the iron is hot,” said Jennings’ promoter, Russell Peltz. “Why go backwards after the win over Byarm?”
