Light heavyweight titleholder Tavoris Cloud remained undefeated and retained his IBF belt with a hard-fought split decision over former beltholder Gabriel Campillo on Saturday in Corpus Christi, Texas.
Cloud (24-0, 19 knockouts), who won by scores of 116-110, 114-112 and 111-115, started fast by scoring two first-round knockdowns. However, Campillo (21-4-1, 8 KOs), of Madrid, Spain, got his jab and lateral movement going in the second round, and was soon landing accurate combinations along with head-snapping uppercuts and thudding body shots.
Campillo won the majority of rounds going into the late rounds in the eyes of most observers. Cloud rallied in the championship rounds, but not enough to win the bout – especially by a score as lopsided as 116-110 – in the opinion of most fans watching the entertaining Showtime-televised bout.
