Devon Alexander MD 10 Marcos Maidana: In a 12-round fight, I would favor Marcos Maidana’s unadulterated aggression and ability to mentally break opponents by willingly taking one punch to throw two.
But a 10-rounder on home soil would favor a smooth boxer in Devon Alexander, who has pulled out close decisions in St. Louis before against Lucas Matthysse and Andriy Kotelnik, the latter of which occurred at the same venue as Saturday’s bout, the Scottrade Center.
I like Alexander to compile enough rounds in the bank on the strength of his right hook to withstand a late charge from Maidana, who has shown a pattern of shaking off slow starts to finish strong. Alexander by majority decision over Maidana.
Devon Alexander UD 10 Marcos Maidana: I’ve got Devon Alexander by unanimous decision. I think he will take to 147 very well physically. I expect him to drop Marcos Maidana with an uppercut at some point ala the Juan Urango fight.
Maidana practically begs to be dropped by an uppercut every fight. He is slow, predictable and tailor-made for a guy like Alexander. This is an example of Eric Gomez’s evolution as a matchmaker. It will be fun, but new acquisition Alexander, who is an excellent draw at home, will be victorious.
Marcos Maidana TKO 10 Devon Alexander: This is Devon Alexander’s make or break moment. In his last three fights, he’s struggled to figure out who he is. Marcos Maidana makes everyone tell the truth on that question.
I vote for the latter as he has to have doubt creeping in. He won’t have the trouble finding Maidana he has had in previous fights. The problem will be when Maidana keeps coming.
Devon Alexander UD 10 Marcos Maidana: I think Devon Alexander will take advantage of his significant edge in boxing ability to avoid Marcos Maidana’s biggest shots and win a unanimous decision.
Devon Alexander W 10 Marcos Maidana: My gut says Marcos Maidana, but here’s the issue. What will the judges in St. Louis say? Devon Alexander has been the beneficiary of some pretty interesting scoring in his recent bouts.
Maidana brings a lot of pressure, but is far slower than Alexander. It’s also 10 rounds, which benefits Alexander. I think Alexander will do well enough in spots to make it a close, controversial type of fight that people complain about, but it won’t be a robbery.
The experts favor Devon Alexander, 14-1, over Marcos Maidana
