HBO’s Hershman touts Mayweather, Pacquiao, network’s 2012 lineup

WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP BOXING

March 17 – New York, NY

Edwin Rodriguez (20-0, 14 KOs)  vs. Donovan George (22-1-1, 19 KOs), super middleweights

“These are just two, straight-ahead, no-nonsense fighters who are just going to put it all on the line. That’s probably a contender for Fight of The Year.

“In my estimation, it’s one of the most intriguing co-features in the line up, and I can’t wait to see it. It could very well steal the show”:

RING champion Sergio Martinez (48-2-2, 27 KOs) vs. Matthew Macklin (28-3, 19 KOs)

“These are two guys who don’t know how to go backward. Matthew Macklin, I think, will be tougher and more of a challenge to Martinez than his prior fight [with Darren Barker,] which was a pretty tough fight.

“I think that it’s going to be a test of wills and a hard-fought battle that goes into the late rounds. I think that Matthew Macklin is not to be underestimated.

“Macklin’s performance against [WBA beltholder] Felix Sturm was deserving of a win, but that happens often over there [in Germany.] I still think that this is one of the most intriguing match ups for Martinez.

“I say that even though Matthew Macklin is not even a well-known fighter here. I still think that on that card at [New York's Madison Square Garden,] on Saint Patrick’s Day, that it’s going to be a rockin’ house.”

March 24 – Houston, TX

James Kirkland (30-1, 27 KOs) vs. Carlos Molina (19-4-2, 6 KOs), junior middleweights

“I think that James has something to prove now. He had a setback, and now he’s trying to get back into the title picture and into the bit fights and he’s back on track.

“He’s an amazing talent and a very exciting fighter. This is a real step up, and he’s got his hands full. But I think he’s going to do it. I don’t think Molina has fought anybody who hits as hard as Kirkland.”

Erik Morales (52-7, 36 KOs) vs. Danny Garcia (22-0, 14 KOs), for Morales’ WBC junior welterweight belt

“This is a legend in the making in Erik Morales against a young, upstart in Danny Garcia. I love to see these kinds of fights. Erik Morales is never in a bad fight. He doesn’t go backward.

Danny Garcia is a very, very talented kid. This could be a tough test for Erik Morales. This is a very, very difficult fight. I think that any time that you have the Mexican flavor adding to a fight, you know, they have some of the best fans in the world.

“Again, it’s in Texas and I think that it’s going to be a fun night. I don’t know whose side the fans are going to rooting for. I think that by the end of that night, the fans will be on their feet.”

April 14 – Las Vegas, NV

Brandon Rios (29-0-1, 22 KOs) vs. Yuriorkis Gamboa (21-0, 16 KOs), for the WBA’s lightweight belt

“Out of all of the fights on our schedule, this is the one that I’m looking forward to the most. That’s not to denigrate any of the others, because they’re all amazing fights. But I can’t wait for April 14.

“Rios hasn’t fought anyone as elusive as Gamboa, and we know that Rios has struggled with the weight. So, it’s kind of an even situation, because Brandon has to get down to that weight, and Yuriorkis has to get up to that weight.

“So I think that that evens it out. Rios is in for a fight unlike any other. When Rios fought Miguel Acosta, that was an scintillating fight.  Acosta was very skilled and a great counter-puncher. But I think that Gamboa is just at another level.

“So I think that Brandon is going to be in for a very difficult fight, but the kid shows no quit and has some of the most heart out of anybody that I’ve seen. I just think that it’s going to be exciting, because Brandon’s going to make sure that he makes this a brawl.”

April 28 – Atlantic City, NJ

Bernard Hopkins (52-5-2, 32 KOs) vs. Chad Dawson (30-1, 17 KOs) II, for Hopkins’ WBC light heavyweight belt

“Tickets are selling really well, and I think that the house is going to be really great. Bernard Hopkins, what can you say about a guy at his age, doing what he’s doing at the level he’s doing it? He’s willing to take on arguably the best light heavyweight in the world, bar none, in Chad Dawson.

“But I’m sure that Bernard will have a lot to say about that on April 28. This is a very interesting fight for me. I know that a lot of people are skeptical that in the ring, it’s going to be pleasing, but I saw an intensity in Chad Dawson, an intensity in Bernard Hopkins that I have not seen in recent memory.

“This is going to be a fierce fight. I think that it’s going to be much more interesting than anyone would give it credit for.”
