Anselmo Moreno defended his WBA bantamweight title for the 10th time with a dominant ninth-round stoppage of David De La Mora in a Showtime-televised co-feature to the Abner Mares-Eric Morel fight in El Paso, Texas, on Saturday.
The 26-year-old southpaw from Panama was in control from the opening bell until De La Mora decided to give up 10 seconds into the ninth round. Moreno (33-1-1, 12 knockouts) scored knockdowns in rounds two (from a right hook) and six (from a left under the solar plexus) and landed 56 percent of his total power punhces through eight rounds.
De La Mora (24-2, 17 KOs), of Tijuana, alternately tried to feint, counter-punch and swarm Moreno to no avail. The 23-year-old fighter did not have an answer for Moreno’s jab, hook (off the jab), footwork and ability to slip punches.
After the fight, Moreno, who was up 80-70 (twice) and 79-71 on the official judges scorecards at the time of the stoppage, said he would be interested in going up in weight to face the Mares-Morel winner or WBO titleholder Nonito Donaire.
