Gonzalez stops Hirales in fourth round, retains 108-pound belt

Junior flyweight beltholder Roman Gonzalez scored a fourth-round knockout of Ramon Garcia Hirales to retain his WBA title in Pomona, Calif., on Saturday.

Gonzalez (32-0, 27 knockouts), of Nicaragua, withstood the effective aggression of Hirales in rounds two and three before dropping the Mexican in the fourth and putting the game challenger away with a left uppercut-right cross combination at 2:09 of the round.

It was the third defense of the WBA junior flyweight belt by the 24-year-old Gonzalez, who held a title at strawweight before moving up one division in late 2010.

Hirales (16-4-1, 9 KOs), a 29-year-old southpaw from Baja California, lost his second straight fight, three of his last four (albeit to world-class opposition).
