WBO junior featherweight titleholder Nonito Donaire will face IBF counterpart Jeffrey Mathebula, and former WBA lightweight beltholder Brandon Rios will rise a division to meet junior welterweight Mauricio Herrera in a double-header from the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif., on July 7, Top Rank Inc. CEO Bob Arum told RingTV.com on Tuesday night.
BoxingScene.com first reported the story.
Arum said that Donaire (28-1, 18 KOs) will face Mathebula (26-3-2, 14 KOs), of South Africa, who has won three straight bouts.
In his last fight in March, Mathebula earned the crown and a split-decision over Takalani Ndlovu, avenging his last defeat — also a split-decision — that happened in September of 2010.
Rios (30-0-1, 22 KOs) is taking on Herrera (18-2, 7 KOs), whose last bout was a loss by unanimous decision in a brawl with Mike Alvarado (33-0, 23 KOs) in April.
“Herrera looked so good fighting Alvarado,” said Arum. “So that’s going to be a great fight and it’s a great double-header.”
