Undefeated welterweight prospect Jessie Vargas signed a promotional contract with Top Rank, the Las Vegas-based promotional company announced on Tuesday.
Vargas (19-0, 9 knockouts), who had been part of the Mayweather Promotions team of boxers and developed on Golden Boy Promotions cards since turning pro in 2008, said he will begin training at the Top Rank Gym in Las Vegas, where he lives.
The 23-year-old Los Angeles native is managed by Cameron Dunkin and trained by Robert Alcazar.
“Everyone at Top Rank is very excited about Jessie,” stated Bob Arum, CEO of Top Rank, in the press release.
“Jessie Vargas is a Top 10 welterweight who not only wants to win a world championship, but is looking to be a star in the sport,” Dunkin was quoted in the release.
“I am planning to be very busy, fighting three, four times a year,” said Vargas, a former U.S. amateur standout who won two national Golden Gloves titles while compiling amateur record of 120-20.
Among his notable pro victories is first-round stoppage of former 140-pound titleholder Vivian Harris, a hard-fought split decision over rugged fringe contender Josesito Lopez, and a 10-round decision over former 130-pound beltholder and welterweight title challenger Steve Forbes in his last bout.
Vargas’s first bout under the Top Rank banner is expected to take place in September.
