LAS VEGAS – Rocky Martinez defeated Miguel Beltran Jr. by split decision in an entertaining brawl on the Sergio Martinez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. undercard Saturday at the Thomas & Mack Arena.
The fighters held nothing back from beginning to end, throwing one hard punch after another, although neither went down in a very close fight. The scores were 116-111 for Beltran and 114-113 and 114-113 for Martinez, who lost a point for punching behind the head.
Martinez (26-1-1, 16 knockouts), from Puerto Rico, won the WBO junior lightweight title. Beltran (26-2, 17 KOs) is from Mexico.
In other fights, Matthew Macklin of England, who was coming off a KO loss to Martinez in March, stopped Joachim Alcine (33-3-1, 19 KOs) only 2:26 into their scheduled 10-round middleweight fight.
Macklin (29-4, 20 KOs) put Alcine down and hurt him with an overhand right and the Canada-based Haitian never recovered. He went down again and then was being pummeled against the ropes until the fight was stopped.
And Cuban Guillermo Rigondeaux (11-0, 8 KOs) easily outpointed Robert Marroquin (22-2, 15 KOs) of Dallas to retain his WBA junior featherweight title. It was Rigondeaux’s second defense.
