LAS VEGAS – Sergio Martinez survived a brutal final-round knockdown to defeat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by a one-sided decision and reclaim the WBC middleweight title Saturday at the Thomas & Mack Arena.
Martinez dominated for 11-plus rounds, controlling the fight with his right jab and movement. Chavez scored when he was able to trap Martinez against the ropes but that didn’t happen enough for him to win rounds.
The fight appeared to be a run-away going into the 12th round. However, a desperate Chavez put Martinez down and hurt him with a series of punches with about a minute to go and it wasn’t clear whether the Argentine would survive.
Martinez, THE RING 160-pound champion, was able to reach the final bell by firing back as Chavez tried to finish the job and was standing after three minutes.
The judges scored it for 117-110, 118-109, 118-109. THE RING had it 118-109.
