Martinez-Chavez Jr. gate totals more than $3 million

LAS VEGAS — Saturday night’s unanimous decision victory by RING middleweight champion Sergio Martinez over former WBC titleholder Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. drew a live gate of more than $3 million, according to figures released by Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director, Keith Kizer.

Taking place on Mexican Independence Day weekend, Martinez-Chavez Jr., pulled in $3,052,475 for 16,939 tickets bought by a sellout crowd at the Thomas and Mack Center. Although zero tickets went unsold, 751 of them were given away on a complimentary basis.

Martinez (50-2-2, 28 knockouts) dominated Chavez (46-0-1, 32 KOs) throughout, but had to rise from a 12th round knockdown to win by scores of 118-109 on the cards of judges Dave Moretti and Adalaide Byrd, and 117-110 on that of Stanley Christodoulu.

Chavez, 26, earned $3 million compared to $1.4 million for Martinez, and was coming off a seventh-round stoppage victory over southpaw challenger Andy Lee in June. Martinez was last in the ring for an 11th-round knockout victory over Matthew Macklin.
