Russian light heavyweigh Sergey Kovalev, of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla., has signed a multi-year promotional contract with Main Events, the company announced on Wednesday.
“This is the most important decision I have made in my professional career,” said Kovalev, a hard-punching 29-year-old. “I feel I have made a very good choice by signing with Main Events. I am ready for my next fight right now. I will fight anyone.”
In his last fight on Sept. 21, Kovalev scored three knockdowns with flush, right crosses to improve to 19-0-1 with his 17th knockout — a third-round stoppage of late-sub Lionell Thompson on the undercard of the fifth edition of NBC Sports’ Fight Night series from the Sand Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pa.
Kovalev came up with his fourth straight stoppage, and his seventh knockout during his past eight fights, during which he is 7-0-1.
“We are finally in the right place. I knocked on many doors: Golden Boy, Top Rank, and more,” said Egis Klimas, Kovalev’s manager.
“However, no one took it seriously that Sergey Kovalev will be the next big champion in his weight division. But Main Events has the same beliefs. They did take us seriously. We signed with them, and we are very happy with our decision.”
