Decarie stops Perez in sixth round on B.A.D.

Canadian welterweight standout Antonin Decarie made his first fight of 2012 a significant one by stopping previously unbeaten Alex Perez in the sixth round of the opening bout of an HBO Boxing After Dark broadcast from Mashantucket, Conn., on Saturday.

Decarie (27-1, 8 knockouts), a 29-year-old veteran from Montreal, hurt Perez with a cross-hook combination midway through the sixth round of their scheduled 12-round bout. He followed up with a big right hand that floored the 30-year-old southpaw from Newark, N.J. Perez (16-1, 9 KOs) got up on unsteady legs and was quickly pressed to the ropes where Decarie nailed him with repeated flush rights until referee Danny Shiavone finally stepped in and ended the bout at the 2:54 mark of the round.

Decarie, who landed a staggering 66 percent of his power punches (99 of 150), according to CompuBox, was in complete command of the fight prior to the stoppage. The Montreal native stunned Perez in the first round with a hook. He buzzed the 6-foot boxer-puncher into the ropes with a sweeping overhand right in the second round.

Perez had a moment by landing a nice left in the fourth round, but Decarie planted his feet and returned fire before regaining control through the fifth round with his stick-and-move strategy.
