Alexander outpoints Bailey in lackluster fight

Devon Alexander won his third major title in a second weight class by outpointing Randall Bailey over 12 uneventful rounds on the undercard of the Danny Garcia-Erik Morales rematch in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Saturday.

The 25-year-old former WBC/IBF 140-pound titleholder won the IBF welterweight belt by scores of 115-111, 116-110 and 117-109. Alexander (24-1, 13 knockouts) outboxed and outworked Bailey, who simply did not let his hands go throughout the fight, in every round.

Referee Arthur Mercante Jr. penalized a point from both fighters for excessive holding in round six.

Bailey (43-8, 37 KOs) was able to land his vaunted right hand a few times, particularly in rounds five and 11, but Alexander took the power well and answered back. The 38-year-old veteran stalked Alexander all night but he seldom jabbed or used his hook and was unable to cut the ring off on the faster southpaw.
