Fresh off his split-decision victory over Marvin Quintero on HBO Saturday, Miguel Vazquez will likely defend his IBF lightweight title on Dec. 8 against undefeated Mercito Gesta, Gesta’s trainer and manager Vincent Parra told RingTV.
“We love the challenge Vazquez presents,” said Parra. “Mercito will be well prepared for this fight. We will make him pay for every mistake.”
The bout is slated to be on the HBO PPV undercard of the fourth encounter between Manny Pacquiao and Juan Manuel Marquez. Gesta (26-0-1, 14 knockouts) is a Filipino native living in San Diego, making it a natural for the 25-year-old to challenge for his first title on a Pacquiao card.
Vazquez (32-3, 13 knockouts) struggled against Quintero, eking out the split verdict, but wasn’t touched much and came out with no injuries. Both sides have reportedly agreed and are waiting on contracts. Gesta will start camp at Big Bear on Thursday.
