Golden Boy Promotions and Fox Deportes will present four modern classic title bouts – Oscar De La Hoya’s two fights with Julio Cesar Chavez and Israel Vazquez-Rafael Marquez I and II – to fight fans on Black Friday, Nov. 23, beginning at 7:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. PT.
The main event of the telecast showcases the two-fight series between De La Hoya – then the sport’s undefeated “Golden Boy” – and Mexican legend Julio Cesar Chavez with replays of their 1996 and 1998 title bouts. In the first fight De La Hoya, only four years removed from his 1992 Olympic gold medal performance, rose from the lightweight division, where he held two major titles, to challenge Chavez, the reigning WBC 140-pound champ.
In their anticipated rematch, Chavez assumed the role of challenger to De La Hoya, then the WBC welterweight titleholder, and the two most popular fighters in the sport at the time put on a spirited battle.
The telecast will also revisit one of boxing’s great rivalries with the bouts No. 2 and No. 3 of the action packed four-fight series between Mexican countrymen Israel “El Magnifico” Vazquez and Rafael “Rafa” Marquez. Both the rematch, which took place in 2007, and the rubbermatch, which took place in 2008, were contested for THE RING’s 122-pound title and both earned Fight of the year honors from the magazine and every other boxing publication.
