Adamek defeats Cunningham by split decision

Tomasz Adamek defeated Steve Cunningham by a split decision Saturday afternoon in Bethlehem, Pa., on NBC, the Pole’s second split-decision victory over Cunningham. Adamek received the nod when they met as cruiserweights in 2008.

The scores on Saturday were 115-113 and 116-112 for Adamek and 115-113 for Cunningham. I had it 115-113 for Cunningham.

Cunningham (25-4, 12 knockouts) used movement and a sharp left jab, as well as dozens of solid rights, to frustrate Adamek (48-2, 29 KOs) much of the fight. However, Adamek, the bigger of the two by 20 pounds, pressured Cunningham throughout and landed his own hard punches.

The fight was difficult to score as most rounds were very close.

Judge Debra Barnes’ score of 115-113 for Adamek was originally announced as 115-115, making the fight a draw. However, a Pennsylvania official made the correction and Adamek was declared the winner.
