Thompson stops Price in second round

Tony Thompson shocked the British boxing world by stopping previously undefeated English heavyweight star David Price in the second round of their scheduled 12 rounder in Price’s hometown of Liverpool on Saturday.

After a tentative opening round, the 41-year-old American veteran caught Price with a short right hook on the inside two minutes into the second, dropping the 2008 Olympic bronze medalist on his back. Price (15-1, 13 knockouts) struggled to his feet on wobbly legs and referee Steve Gray waved the contest off at 2:17 of the round.

The upset stunned the audience in Liverpool’s Echo Arena. They had come to see the 6-foot-8, 29-year-old boxer-puncher extend his streak of stoppage victories to 10 in a row. Thompson (37-3, 25 KOs) is a well-traveled former title challenger who was coming off a sixth-round TKO loss against heavyweight champ Wladimir Klitschko last July.

The southpaw technician seemed ripe for the picking for the British standout, but it was Price who was clipped.

A full ringside report from Tom Gray will be posted shortly.
