Jessie Vargas defeated Wale Omotoso by a unanimous decision in a 10-round welterweight fight on the Timothy Bradley-Ruslan Provodnikov undercard Saturday in Carson, Calif.
The judges scored it 96-93, 96-93 and 97-92.
The fight was entertaining, with Vargas (22-0, 9 knockouts) going down in the second round and Vargas almost stopping Omotoso (23-1, 19 KOs) in the fifth. Omotoso was effective early in the fight but Vargas, boxing more carefully after his knockdown, seemed to take control of the fight beginning in the third or fourth round.
Omotoso entered the ring at 164 pounds after rehydrating, 10 more than Vargas, according to HBO.
