Abregu signs with Top Rank

Top Rank CEO Bob Arum informed RingTV.com on Wednesday that his company has signed hard-hitting welterweight Luis Carlos Abregu to a promotional contract.

A 29-year-old from Salta, Salta, Argentina, Abregu (33-1, 27 knockouts) scored his HBO-televised fifth straight stoppage victory ovver previously undefeated Puerto Rican prospect Thomas Dulorme (18-1, 13 KOs), who turned 23 in January.

Abregu suffered his only loss in July of 2010, when he dropped a unanimous decision against current WBO 147-pound beltholder Tim Bradley.

“We think that Abregu is a terrific fighter who fits right in there in the welterweight division and he would be a great matchup with any of these welterweights,” said Arum.

“Whether it’s (Ruslan) Provodnikov, with (Brandon) Rios, (Mike) Alvarado, and with Jessie Vargas. As you know we have a lot of guys in that division, and Abregu is an elite-class fighter. We’re right in the middle of everything.”

According to matchmaker Sean Gibbons, Abregu will next fight on April 27 against Canada’s Antonin Decarie (27-1, 8 KOs), a winner of four straight who is coming off September’s sixth-round stoppage win over previously unbeaten Alex Perez (17-1, 9 KOs).

Abregu-Decarie will take place on the undercard of an HBO-televised main event featuring RING and WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (50-2-2, 28 KOs) Martin Murray (25-0-1, 11 KOs) at Club Atlético Vélez Sarsfield, Buenos Aires, Distrito Federal, Argentina.
