Video: D. Garcia and his father, trainer, Angel

Showtime has released a video examining the relationship between junior welterweight champion Danny Garcia, Philadelphia, and his father and trainer Angel Garcia in advance of Garcia’s title defense against former 140-pound titleholder and welterweight champ Zab Judah on Saturday at Barclays Center in Brooklyn.

“Danny was born with the umbilical cord around his neck. Basically, he was suffocating. He was hanging himself,” said Angel Garcia.  “So when he was born… The doctor told me that… I heard him breathing again, I was like, ‘Wow.’ I knew right then that Danny was gifted.”

Danny Garcia calls his dad “inspirational” as a result of his having overcome throat cancer.

“He beat cancer… When he was going through it, I always looked at my dad like, ‘He’s going to be okay.’ I was like, ‘That’s my dad.’ You know you look at your dad like Superman,” said Danny Garcia.

“Now that I look back on it, he could have really died. That’s when I started to understand life and how serious it was, and we became even tighter. If my dad can beat cancer, then I can beat anybody. I use that every time I step into the ring.”

In facing Judah (42-7, 29 knockouts), Garcia (25-0, 16 KOs) is returning to the site of his last victory, a fourth-round knockout of Mexican legend Erik Morales at Barclays Center last October.

Garcia-Judah was postponed from its original date of Feb. 9 due to a rib injury suffered by Garcia, which the boxer said has since healed.
