LAS VEGAS — A press conference is planned for mid-morning on Saturday at the MGM Grand to formally announce the June 22 clash between WBA welterweight titleholder Paulie “The Magic Man” Malignaggi and rising WBC lightweight titleholder Adrien “The Problem” Broner that is slated to happen on June 22 at Barclays Center on Showtime, Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer informed RingTV.com on Tuesday.
Schaefer was in the MGM lobby in attendance at Tuesday’s grand arrivals for pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. and welterweight challener Robert Guerrero in advance of Mayweather’s WBC belt on Saturday on Showtime Pay Per View at the MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Last Friday in Brooklyn, at the weigh-in for Danny Garcia vs. Zab Judah, Broner and Malignaggi engaged in two separate obscenity-laced verbal altercations in full view of the media camera crews.
Malignaggi (32-4, 7 knockouts) said the action began when Broner (26-0, 22 KOs) began to stare at him while he was in an interview with a sports station.
Schaefer expects similar fireworks during Saturday’s press conference.
“We’re going to have, this Saturday, here, a press conference at 11 o’clock and I think that it’s a press conference where we probably could charge and we would have a sold-out house, because these are not only two of the best boxers in the sport,” said Schaefer.
“But they are certainly, without any question, the two best talkers in the sport. So this is going to be a very colorful promotion and I can’t wait. I can’t wait for the press conference, and I hardly ever say that. And, I can’t wait for the fight. And I’m sure that at the Barclay Center, we’ll keep on getting more and more people there and I think that we’re going to have a sellout with Broner-Malignaggi.”
