Fans expect Abner Mares to earn his third world title in a third weight class when he challenges WBC featherweight beltholder Daniel Ponce de Leon in the co-featured bout to the Floyd Mayweather-Robert Guerrero showdown in Las Vegas on Saturday.
More than 41 percent (41.9%) of the voters of a recent RingTV.com poll believe that Mares, a former bantamweight and junior featherweight titleholder, will beat Ponce de Leon by decision when they meet at the MGM Grand on a Showtime PPV broadcast. And though Ponce de Leon has one of the highest KO ratios in boxing, 24.7 percent of the voters believe that Mares will be the fighter to score a knockout.
Ponce de Leon, a former 122-pound titleholder who has polished up his game in recent years, was tabbed by 23.7 percent of voters to defend his WBC title by knockout. Only 8.6 percent of the voters believe the rugged southpaw will win a decision.
