Aguiniga collapses making weight, Fox Sports Net fight with Vargas is off

Former contender Jose Aguiniga collapsed while working out on Thursday and is currently hospitalized. As a result, Aguiniga’s scheduled 10-round junior lightweight bout against Francisco Vargas on Friday is off.

Aguiniga-Vargas was to be the main event of a live Fox Sport Net/Fox Deportes broadcast from the Cosmopolitan Resort in Las Vegas. Aguiniga (33-0, 15 knockouts), a 31-year-old veteran from Oxnard, Calif., ended a four-year retirement last year with two victories against mid-level opponents in junior welterweight bouts.

The talented boxer had shed more than 50 pounds before making his comeback and there was skepticism in the boxing community as to whether he would be able to get down to a 130 pounds for the NABF title bout against Vargas (15-0-1, 12 KOs), a 2008 Mexican Olympian.

The new main event of the Friday’s Golden Boy Promotions/Mayweather Promotions card will be a junior welterweight bout between undefeated prospect Antonio Orozco and Jose Reynoso, which was originally intended to be the first bout of the broadcast.  Orozco-Reynoso will be bumped up from a scheduled eight rounds to a 10-round fight.

Orozco (16-0, 12 KOs), of San Diego, is coming off a sixth-round KO of tough Danny Escobar last November. Reynoso (16-3-1, 3 KOs), of Riverside, Calif., has won seven of his last eight bouts but the 28-year-old southpaw is coming off a second-round KO to recent welterweight title challenger Ruslan Provodnikov.

During Reynoso’s seven-bout unbeaten streak, he scored victories over two undefeated prospects, Hector Serrano (KO 8) and Aris Ambriz (MD 8).

A scheduled four-round heavyweight bout between 2012 U.S. Olympian Dominic Breazeale (4-0, 4 KOs) and Lance Gauch (3-6-2, 3 KOs) will now open the broadcast.
