It was no contest. The fighter that fans want to see RING welterweight champ Floyd Mayweather Jr. fight next is the magazine’s reigning junior middleweight champ, Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, according to the results of a recent RingTV.com poll.
Alvarez, who earned the RING’s 154-pound title with a unanimous decision over previously unbeaten Austin Trout last month, garnered 68.1 percent of more than 10,000 votes.
The closest runners up, former 140-pound titleholder Amir Khan and the winner of the June 22 Paul Malignaggi-Adrien Broner welterweight bout, combined for less than a quarter of the votes. Khan received 12.4 percent; the Malinaggi-Broner winner recieved 11.2 percent.
The other candidates, the winner of the June 8 Erislandy Lara-Alfredo Angulo junior middleweight fight and welterweight beltholder Devon Alexander, totalled less than 10 percent of the votes combined.
