Peterson-Matthysse: Live round-by-round updates

 

 

RingTV.com will be posting live, round-by-round updates for Saturday night’s Showtime televised 141-pound fight between Lucas Matthysse and IBF titleholder Lamont Peterson.

The broadcast will begin at 9:45 p.m. ET

Matthysse, 30, is THE RING’s No. 1-rated junior welterweight  and improved his record to 34-2 with his 32nd knockout by stopping Peterson (31-2-1, 16 knockouts) for the first time in his career, coming in the third round after two third-round knockdowns.

For Peterson, who was also dropped in the second round, the end came at 2:14 of the round as referee Steve Smoger stopped the fight.

Matthysse earned his sixth consecutive stoppage win since falling to current IBF welterweight titleholder Devon Alexander by disputed split-decision as a 140-pounder in June of 2011.

Peterson, 29, is THE RING’s No. 2-rated 140-pounder and came in with a mark of 4-0-1, with three knockout wins since falling by unanimous decision to current WBO 147-pound beltholder Tim Bradley as a junior welterweight in December of 2009.

In victory over Peterson, Matthysse positioned himself for a major fight against unbeaten RING, WBA and WBC champion Danny Garcia on Sept. 7.

PETERSON STOPPED IN THE THIRD ROUND AFTER BEING DROPPED ONCE IN THE SECOND ROUND AND TWICE IN THE FINAL ROUND.

Lamont Peterson enters first wearing a purple robe with a silver hood and sleeves. Seems go be getting solid support from the crowd. Theme music is “Shining Star” by Earth, Wind and Fire.

Lucas Matthysse enters second, wearing a baby blue colored robe and white lapels and the large depiction of a bright sun on the back.

To Matthysse’s right is Sam Watson, right hand man to advisor to the stars, Al Haymon, with whom Matthysse recently signed.

Matthysse, other than a smattering of Argentine fans appears to be receivng more boos than cheers.

 

Round 1: Fighters in the middle of the ring. Peterson two short jabs and a missed right hand. Matthysse short with a right aimed at the body. Two jabs by Peterson, left hook lands for Matthysse. Peterson using his jab as a range finder. Good use of height by Peterson from a distance. Good right to the body from Peterson. Matthysse can’t find him and is not cutting off the ring. Good control by Peterson. Clinch. Good movement by Peterson. Three decent jabs and a short right by Peterson. Good right to body and left to head from Matthysse. Right by Matthysse. Peterson, 10-9.

Round 2: Three early misses for Matthysse. Both fighters landed seven punches in the first round, according to punch stats. Peterson still on his bicycle. Clinch. Matthysse trying to rough up Peterson, goes to the body and head with a right during a clinch. A couple of decent short punches inside from Matthysse. Matthysse lands a left uppercut and a right. Solid right hand by Matthysse. The blow moves Peterson. Solid left and a right by Matthysse, IT’S CALLED A KNOCKDOWN AS PETERSON STUMBLES AND FALLS TO HIS RIGHT SIDE ONTO THE CANVAS FROM A LEFT HOOK HIGH ON HIS HEAD THAT COMES OVER HIS HIGHLY-HELD RIGHT GUARD. Left hand-ed punch landed near the right side of Peterson’s forehead with 36 seconds to go in the round. Peterson rises, but is clinching and appears to be shaken as he clings to Matthysse while being pushed around in order to survive the round. Matthysse, 10-8; Matthysse, 19-18.

 

 

Round 3: Matthysse down from an early slip after whiffing a wild left hook. Matthysse rises. They’re exchanging and Matthysse appears to be getting the best of Peterson. They alternately clinch and exchange, Peterson takes a right hand and Peeterson comes with a left hook. PETERSON GETS DROPPED WITH A WICKED COUNTER LEFT HOOK THAT LANDS HIM FLAT ON HIS BACK. PETERSON SITS, BUT FALLS TO HIS LEFT AS HE HAS TROUBLE RISING. HE’S UP, STUMBLES BACKWARD, GETS THE OKAY FROM SMOGER TO CONTINUE WITH 54 SECONDS LEFT. HE’S DOWN AGAIN FROM A SECOND LEFT HOOK FOUR SECONDS LATER AND IT’S OVER AS SMOGER STEPS IN AND WAVES IT OFF.

THIRD-ROUND KNOCKOUT FOR LUCAS MATTHYSSE!!!!!
