Julian Williams came out blazing against veteran Joachim Alcine in the first round, landing at least 25 unanswered punches before sending Alcine sprawling to the canvas. It looked like the 23-year-old Williams, a top 154-pound prospect from Philadelphia, was going to have an easy night against the 37-year-old Haitian with the gray beard on the undercard of the Paulie Malignaggi-Adrien Broner welterweight title match at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Saturday.
But Alcine (33-5-1, 19 knockouts), a former WBA junior middleweight titleholder, got up off the canvas, finished the round and settled in to make Williams earn his eight-round unanimous victory.
It was a step up fight for Williams (13-0-1, 8 KOs), but he treated it like a summer stroll in Prospect Park until Alcine decided to fight back over the course of the final three rounds.
Ultimately Alcine was no match for Williams’ power. Besides the first round Alcine was on the canvas in the fourth and fifth rounds. And Williams knocked him down in the third, but it came on a break. Surprisingly referee Steve Willis did not warn Williams or take away a point for the infraction.
Alcine, who came battling back in the later rounds and appeared to stun Williams with some of his body shots, weathered everything that Williams could throw at him and finished on his feet. But he still came up very short on the decision as all three judges scored it 77-72 for Williams.
