The earliest that a bout could happen between RING middleweight champion Sergio Martinez and WBA titleholder Gennady Golovkin would be in September of 2014, said Martinez’s advisor, Sampson Lewkowicz.
Martinez (51-2-2, 28 knockouts), also the WBC’s 160-pound beltholder, was last in the ring for April’s unanimous-decision win over Martin Murray, representing his seventh-straight win during a run that includes four stoppage victories.
Meanwhile, Golovkin (27-0, 23 KOs) scored his 14th-straight knockout last month against Matthew Macklin, whom Martinez stopped in March of last year.
Lewkowicz and promoter Lou DiBella told RingTV.com’s Ryan Songalia that Martinez would gladly face Golovkin in the future. Lewkowicz later said, however, that a bout between Martinez and Golovkin would have to happen in September of next year, after a Martinez return in the spring or early summer.
“I think that sometime next year, sometime between March and June, Martinez would fight against somebody after a year without a fight,” said Lewkowicz.
“After a year without fighting, we would not allow him to go right against Golovkin, so it would be somebody else first. Then the grand finale, against Golovkin, could be in September. That would be the perfect time.”
